CORTEN® STEEL SHEET:

Steel resistant to atmospheric corrosion

Corten steel sheets are designed for applications requiring outstanding atmospheric corrosion resistance combined with a distinctive natural appearance. Thanks to the formation of a protective oxide layer, they provide long-lasting durability without the need for additional protective coatings. In addition, they offer an excellent balance of mechanical strength, weldability and workability, making them suitable for a wide range of architectural and industrial applications.

Manufactured in accordance with the main European standards, Corten steel sheets are available in various thicknesses and dimensions to meet the requirements of numerous industries. As a result, they are widely used for building façades, bridges, architectural structures, industrial installations, urban furniture, sculptures and exposed steelwork where durability and aesthetic appeal are equally important. Furthermore, their self-protecting surface helps reduce maintenance costs while ensuring reliable long-term performance in outdoor environments.

SSABWEATHERING355®
CORTEN® STEEL

• High-strength hot-rolled structural steel
• Excellent protection against atmospheric corrosion thanks to the formation of a natural protective patina
• High mechanical strength, ideal for structural applications exposed to atmospheric conditions

Main characteristics

Thanks to its alloying elements, COR-TEN® steel develops a stable, self-healing protective patina with its characteristic brown appearance. As a result, it provides atmospheric corrosion resistance up to eight times higher than conventional structural steel.

Advantages of COR-TEN®

In addition to its high mechanical strength, COR-TEN® steel sheets eliminate the need for galvanizing. When painted, they significantly reduce maintenance requirements. The protective patina also helps limit corrosion, even if the paint layer is scratched or chipped.

Origin of the name COR-TEN®

The name COR-TEN® is derived from the material’s two main characteristics:

  • CORCORrosion resistance: high atmospheric corrosion resistance.
  • TENTENsile strength: high mechanical strength.

Main applications:

  • Fume recovery pipes
  • Smokestacks
  • Transport wagons
  • Containers and silos
  • Bridges
  • Decorative and architectural structures
  • Curtain walls (Facades)
  • Guard-rails and road barriers
